We envision a Canada where no one goes hungry. But the problem of hunger is a persistent one. Each month, close to 850,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks, and nearly 40% of those helped are children and youth.


 


Food Banks Canada is the national organization dedicated to relieving hunger across the country by representing and supporting the food bank community across Canada. Our membership and their respective agencies serve approximately 85% of people accessing essential food programs nationwide, assisting over to 800,000 Canadians each month with over 200 million pounds of quality food annually.


 


We have an immediate opening for a critical position at Food Banks Canada – the Marketing and Communications Manager. This person owns anything and everything related to communications, marketing, and branding at our organization, including the regular connection with our membership of 10 provincial associations and 500 food banks. As the in-house communications specialist, the role also provides strategic communications advice, planning and senior writing support to engage our multiple audiences including members, donors, partners, government and the media. This is the perfect role for a person with wide marketing and communications experience, an ability to juggle many different projects, and a passion for ending hunger.


 


Responsibilities


 


Communication planning and execution– 50%



  • Manage the organization’s communication plans and calendar.

  • Lead Food Banks Canada’s online presence including the strategy for our website, intranet and expanding social media opportunities.

  • Maintain relevant content on the website and increase traffic on public and internal intranet.

  • Work with external agencies and partners to produce communication materials (e.g. annual report, brochures).

  • Manage donor communications via email, newsletters, and public relations.

  • Plan and execute communications for Hunger Awareness Week and World Food Day.

  • Provide senior writing and editing support for key documents (e.g. news releases, media advisories, speeches).

  • Respond to public inquiries regarding Food Banks Canada’s mission, membership and services.


 


Brand Development – 25%



  • Execute brand engagement plans to increase the profile of our brand with external and internal audiences.

  • Assist in brand image maintenance and brand development (e.g. brand and communications style guides).

  • Steward the brand to ensure all communication meets brand identity guidelines.

  • Leverage opportunities across media channels to promote the Food Banks Canada brand.


 


Membership Communications – 25%



  • Increase awareness of Food Banks Canada within our membership of 10 provincial associations and 500 food banks.

  • Manage and improve communication vehicles including our newsletter and  intranet to maintain close relations with our membership.

Qualifications


Required



  • Minimum 3 years’ marcom experience, ideally at a manager level

  • Proficiency in writing for a variety of mediums (e.g. web, press releases, blog posts, social media, brochures)

  • Previous experience managing the social media profiles of an organization and engaging with online communities


 


Desired



  • Familiarity with the issues surrounding hunger and poverty

  • Experience working with a national program or non-profit/charitable organization

  • Experience simultaneously communicating with various audiences (e.g. public, membership, donors, corporate, gov.).

  • Experience with events management

  • Experience working with volunteers and/or students

  • Fluency in French (verbal and written) preferred

  • Post-secondary education in marketing, communications, journalism, or public relations


 


Job Details & Compensation


This is a salaried position offering competitive compensation that will be matched to the candidates experience and capabilities. The role reports to the Director of Communications and National Programs (with some support for other managers), and works an expected 40 + hours per week out of our Mississauga office on Orbitor Drive. It requires a somewhat flexible schedule because of time zone differences; team members are often required to work irregular hours (including some weekends) to ensure that the objectives of the organization are being met. An annual training budget is available for each employee to fulfill their professional development goals, and we also offer excellent benefits and an RSP matching program.
