Vancouver Batchmaker

We're Hop, a craft compost company.
To support our rapid expansion, Hop is seeking a full-time employee to start immediately as Batchmaker/Driver in our Vancouver compost facility. The successful candidate will work hands-on directly with our cleantech operation, which produces Canada’s highest-nutrient organic compost.
Hours:
- Hop operates 7 days a week
- Proposed schedule 8am-4pm, Sunday through Thursday
- 40 Hours per week
- Hours and days of work may shift to accommodate company needs
Pay and benefits:
- $19/hour, with the potential for raises and bonuses
- Sunlife Extended Health - eligible after 3 months
Perks:
- Ownership in Hop through stock options
- Fast-paced and independent startup culture
- Meaningful work in a sustainability-driven company
Our Batchmakers help craft every pound of Hop's compost. Working as a member of our fun, supportive, and kick-ass crew, this role includes tasks such as driving our truck for collections pick-up and training with restaurant clients on our urban collections route, loading and offloading batches of compost, sorting food waste and picking out contaminants, screening and packaging the finished product, and maintaining equipment in the facility. You should be comfortable with heavy lifting, getting dirty, and being on your feet for several consecutive hours.
Being a startup, there's much more to Hop’s roles than the immediate duties, and we expect our Batchmakers to help advance Hop's quality and operating practices by contributing to business decisions. Days and hours may fluctuate, and Hop team members must be available to work occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends as overtime when necessary.
A successful candidate will feel at home with physical tasks and be comfortable around machinery; have an eye for detail and take pride in his/her work; exhibit a passion for teamwork; and be ready for a fast-paced environment with plenty of change.
We’d like it if you:
- Have previous experience operating a forklift and/or driving a truck, or are willing to learn (training provided)
- Have a valid license to drive in BC
- Have hands-on experience in a related field (think warehouse or manufacturing work, farming, landscaping, waste management or similar)
- Have experience with composting, at any scale
- Are passionate about sustainability and waste diversion, and ready to get dirty!
Hop is a certified B Corp, committed to doing environmental and social good. Together we’re working to close the loop of local agriculture: repurposing restaurant waste to create high quality compost, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and rebuilding organic soils. Come join our team and help create the future for our sustainable local food industry.
To apply, submit your resume and a cover letter by 5pm on Friday February 16th 2018.
Your application should answer the following question: why is composting cool? Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and applications without a cover letter will not be considered.
