Now, we’re looking to add a new Senior Environmental Planner to our collaborative team that is managing a range of complex permitting projects and environmental reviews throughout the Pacific Northwest. Senior Environmental Planner:
As our new senior environmental planner, your priority will be developing defensible and comprehensive permit applications to obtain environmental permits and approvals for our projects. We work with a range of public and private clients, with a variety of project proposals. Currently, we are leading the permitting effort for a variety of habitat restoration and waterfront infrastructure projects, and are managing a high-profile environmental impact statement that is evaluating management options for an expansive waterbody in the Puget Sound.
You’ll be a key member of the team to make these projects happen, often collaborating with engineers and technical experts to develop strategic project documents. You will also work with the regulatory agencies, beginning early in the process to confirm the regulatory process, potential environmental impacts, and unique requirements for the project. You’ll communicate directly with clients to ensure success in all phases of the work.
The scope of your portfolio and external contact will be much broader than you might find at a larger firm. You will have the opportunity to mentor other environmental planners on the team, while also interacting regularly with principals who will invest in you and your growth.
Beyond your relevant knowledge and expertise, we’re looking for someone who has the following attributes:
- Organizational skills – you see the big picture and the details. You’re able to juggle competing priorities without dropping the ball.
- Verbal and written communication skills – you’ll be interacting with clients, agency representatives, and consultants across multiple projects. You can adjust your style to suit any audience. You can also turn technical information into reader-friendly content without losing the meaning.
- Critical thinking skills – you ask probing questions and synthesize complex information to understand the project and its context, and then develop that into a strategic permitting approach.
- Detail-oriented – the information you’ll handle can be dense, the regulations are complex, and the projects are all different. You take care to review the details, because you know that details make a successful application.
This is a full-time, permanent position with typical hours from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. There will be some overtime based on your projects, and you’ll get that back in extra time off. Regional travel is a small part of this role. You won’t typically go more than 3 hours away, and we’ll cover all your expenses.

Here’s our list of must-haves:
- Degree in environmental science or studies, planning, policy or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in environmental consulting in the Pacific Northwest
- Demonstrated experience with federal, state and local permitting, including strong familiarity with the following:
- SEPA and NEPA documentation
- Joint Aquatic Resources Permit Applications, specific experience with Clean Water Act Section 408/404/401
- Shoreline Master Program interpretations and consistency analyses
- Comprehensive land use and shoreline development permit applications
- Review capabilities for Endangered Species Act and Section 106 documents
- Ability to manage ongoing environmental permitting projects and ensure that documents are prepared consistent with environmental regulations and are tailored to the project proposal
- Strong writing skills and experience as a lead author or as a technical resource
- Experience with regulatory negotiations and coordination with project engineers
- Drive to pursue new projects and lead marketing efforts
Anything on this list would be an asset, but is not required:
- Qualification as a junior Biological Assessment author with WSDOT
- Experience with natural resources mitigation planning
- Experience with wetland or OHWM delineations
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing environmental compliance plans
