Sr. Content Strategist

Please read this ad thoroughly (and all the way to the end) and know we do not accept resumes without the accompaniment of a cover letter. We want to get to know you a bit, so help us out!

Enjoy the Journey With PixelSpoke!

PixelSpoke is an environment for the curious, solution-oriented, good-humored creatives inside each of us — and we're looking for our next outstanding team member.

About the Position

The Sr. Content Strategist is responsible for creating the content on our credit union clients' websites — and for owning content as a discipline at PixelSpoke more broadly. Beyond producing website copy, you'll build the strategy, process, and team that makes great content possible across every client project: defining our approach to content strategy and UX writing, sourcing and managing a bench of freelance content contractors, and setting the quality bar for everything that goes live on our clients' websites.

This is a build role on the content side. Content has recently been covered by interim resources without a dedicated owner, so a lot of what makes this function work well doesn't exist yet — you'll be creating structure, standards, and process as much as you'll be managing execution. We're looking for someone who is energized by that kind of ambiguity, not someone who needs a fully built department to step into.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Own content strategy for client website projects, including information architecture input, UX writing standards, and adherence to each client's established brand voice

  • Source, vet, onboard, and manage a bench of freelance content contractors — including scheduling, invoice approval, and maintaining a consistent quality bar across the roster

  •  Set and run the QA process for content deliverables across active redesign and retainer projects, including QA'ing live client sites and filing bug tickets as needed

  •  Serve as PixelSpoke's go-to expert on the WordPress CMS admin experience — including running admin demos for prospective clients, training new clients on the admin area, and knowing how, where, and when to use the components in our component library

  •  Work directly in Figma alongside our design team to review page layouts, align content with design intent, and flag content-related considerations before handoff

  •  Partner with Client Services and UX at project kickoff to scope content timelines and expectations, and train clients on our content process where needed

  •  Build and document the content function's process and standards — much of this is being created for the first time, so judgment and process-building skill matter as much as content expertise

  •  Partner with Account Managers and our Senior Digital Analyst to identify content-related opportunities for existing clients, such as content audits or conversion optimization

A Day in the Life

Each day starts with a short team huddle to get everyone aligned. After that, you might review contractor deliverables against a project's content outline, then jump on a call with a content contractor to walk through feedback on a batch of page copy. Midday, you meet with an Account Manager to scope content needs for an upcoming client kickoff.

At lunch, you grab a virtual coffee with a teammate, or step outside for some fresh air. In the afternoon, you QA a freshly launched client site, filing a couple of bug tickets for the dev team before hopping on a quick call to train a new client on their site's admin area. You end your day reviewing invoices from your contractor bench and sending a quick update to Client Services on where an in-flight project's content stands.

One note on rhythm: this role ebbs and flows with our project load. When things are busy, you'll lean heavily on your freelancer bench to get content across the finish line. When things are slower, you're the one writing — hands-on, drafting copy yourself.

More About the Position

We're Looking for Someone With…

  •  Experience leading a content or creative function — within an agency, in-house team, or a business you ran yourself — including sourcing, developing, and managing writers or contractors

  •  A strong writing and editing background; direct website or UX copywriting experience is a plus but not required if you bring strong strategic writing chops from another field

  •  A demonstrated track record of building or improving processes and systems in an ambiguous, fast-moving environment

  •  Comfort partnering across strategy, project management, and design/development disciplines

  •  Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, contractors, and timelines concurrently

  •  A proven track record of quickly learning new technology tools and systems

  •  Comfort with ambiguity when a client doesn't have strong brand guides in place — and the ability to suss out the key information needed from clients to still write compelling, on-brand copy

  •  Ability to own, execute, and continually improve on a process — including ones you're building for the first time

  •  An ownership mentality, who is excited about potentially becoming a co-owner of the company after three years

  •  Familiarity with the credit union industry is a bonus — or a genuine curiosity to develop it

Nice to have, but not required: hands-on experience with WordPress or a component-based CMS, and experience with SEO or AEO (answer engine optimization) practices. We'll train you on our specific admin tools and component library — what matters most is the content strategy and process above.

Who Should Apply?

  •  Professionals who've built or run a content, creative, or copy function and know what it takes to manage both the craft and the people doing it

  •  Former agency owners, principals, or creative/Sr. Content Strategist looking to bring that operational depth in-house without running the whole business

  •  Strategic, process-minded people who'd rather build a system than just execute inside someone else's

Year 1 Metrics

  •  Content discipline fully scoped, documented, and operating on defined processes

  •  Freelancer/contractor bench built and functioning with a repeatable contractor onboarding, offboarding, and QA process

  •  Content design (IA, UX writing, sitemaps) fully integrated into the standard UX project workflow

Key Questions

  •  Have you built or led a content function before — including the people and process side, not just the writing?

  •  Are you comfortable presenting your work and recommendations directly to clients?

  •  Are you comfortable creating structure in an environment where a lot of the process doesn't exist yet?

  •  Do you have experience sourcing, vetting, and managing freelance or contract talent?

  •  Are you curious about the credit union industry and excited to develop real expertise in it?

  •  Do you value racial equity and working with people from diverse backgrounds and identities?

  •  Does the prospect of working at a worker-owned cooperative excite you, or are you interested in learning more?

  •  If you're not sure about a few of these, are you excited by the challenge of growing into them?

If you answered "yes" to these questions, we want to meet you!

Our Hiring Process

We have a more thorough hiring process than most small businesses. This is because we believe that the cost of a mis-hire is enormous to both an individual and a company. Our process consists of several interviews, a review of your career history, a skills test, and in-depth reference checks. We want you to find the ideal position for your skill set and strengths.

Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as described in the job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our qualifications described.

People of all identities, including women, people of color, people with disabilities, people of different ages, veterans, members of the LGBTQ community, and formerly incarcerated individuals are strongly encouraged to apply. We have so much to say about our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; please read our full statement at pixelspoke.coop/careers.

If there is anything we can do to accommodate you to participate fully in the recruitment or interview process, please let us know in your cover letter or by emailing careers at pixelspoke.com.

How to Apply

If you feel you can contribute to a dynamic, growing company, please begin your application process by submitting your application, along with a brief cover letter that answers the following questions:

  •  What are your salary expectations?

  •  Which core value resonated with you the most and why?

No phone calls, please.

Salary: $85000 – $95000
